Biography
Frank Rettenbacher is an Austrian Designer living and working in Amsterdam. Here he is Creative Director at A.D.O. Amsterdam Design Office with focus on Philips TV and Audio products. Latest partnerships include Bowers&Wilkins and Kvadrat textiles.
Independently, Frank collaborates and designs furniture under his own studio moniker. His designs have been produced in collaboration with the renowned Italian manufacturer Zanotta and the iconic German furniture company Thonet.
Outside the design studio, Frank teamed up with Dutch producer and DJ Bardo Camp. They've created their debut album 💿 Morba, a fusion of classical and electronic music, available on all major streaming platforms.
As an Industrial Design graduate from Graz’s University of Applied Science, his early career spanned automotive design for Audi along with lighting, consumer electronics and strategic design for Philips Design.
Frank's design achievements, including the award-winning 'DesignLine' glass TV, have garnered international acclaim, earning him a place in the permanent collection of the Amsterdam Museum of Modern Art (The Stedelijk Museum).
Zanotta stories
'Let us focus on Frank Rettenbacher. With very few projects under his belt, but showing a remarkable level of typological innovation [...] the young Austrian designer based in Amsterdam was recruited early on by the Nova Milanese-based company to experiment with new visions for products. In the wake of the Eames' work of the 1950s, with legendary metal supporting structures for their chairs, Rettenbacher designs very thin polygonal surface tops, sustained by a similarly slender tie-rod supporting system. Emil is a small table in polished lacquered steel showing great equilibrium of form. It was created with the aim of reducing the physical impact of the object to a minimum, and it fundamentally reflects a light, changeable vision of day-to-day life.'
